Kids sewing project provides masks for community

By Julianna Jones

Children at All Nations Mozambique have been busy sewing reusable cloth masks during the Covid-19 pandemic, providing protection for many who couldn’t otherwise afford it.

The initiative is part of the Dream Project, which was started last year in order for the children to learn different skills — not just sewing, but also baking, gardening, making cards or jewelry, etc. This enables them to explore their skills and interests, even allowing them to raise funds to invest in the children’s futures.

“At All Nations Mozambique, it is important for us that our children grow up believing their dreams and that they have a future,” said Lizé Oliver, part of the leadership team at AN Mozambique. “It is so important to us to have our children dream, and to know that God is there in their dreams and through him all things are possible.”

The plan started last year, then in March Covid-19 hit. Instead of blocking the Dream Project, however, this gave them an opportunity to serve their community in a new way. The leaders talked with the children and they decided to start with a sewing project, sewing masks to give to those in need. The community around Casa Gemma doesn’t have the funds to buy their own masks.

AN Mozambique members were trusting God to start the project. They had a donated sewing machine from a few years ago, and then a volunteer stepped up to teach sewing, Marietjie Vaughn. She began teaching the children.

“The children are so excited about this project,” Lizé said. “The atmosphere at Casa Gemma just changed, because they are so excited…”

So far the children have sews 750 masks. In addition to making masks to give to their local community, they’ve also been paid to make 120 masks for another children’s project that wants to distribute the masks.

The is only the first act of the Dream Project. AN Mozambique hopes to have more people coming to teach the children skills that will give them a better future.
